SATURN Stakeholder Webinar

We are happy to announce that our partners from Bureau Veritas, MARIN, Cetena, CNR, Naval Group and Sirehna Naval Group, will be hosting a stakeholder focused webinar on July 8th (15:00-16:30 CET), entitled 'Technical measures to mitigate the impact of ship noise on marine life: Underwater Radiated Noise (URN) and Efficiency Analysis'.
The Horizon2020 funded SATURN project has focused on a number of interconnected objectives related to the impact of shipping noise on marine life throughout its project lifecycle. These included:
Developing standards and methods to measure and assess ship noise,
Quantifying sound exposure of marine mammals and quantifying individual and population-level responses of invertebrates, migratory fish, and marine mammals,
Demonstrating and evaluating decision support tools for Marine Spatial Planning, and
Demonstrating and assessing technical solutions to mitigate ship noise.
In this webinar session our partners will share the approaches and results for technical mitigation solutions for current and future vessels which include a pumpjet as well as a trochoidal propulsor, a retrofit propeller design and the use of air bubbles.
The solutions will be presented with respect to their costs, efficiency (EEXI/EEDI/CII) and underwater radiated noise. After the presentations conclude, the floor will be given to our participants to highlight their readiness to replicate these methods, consider factors relevant to implementing these solutions, and to share their views on which factors may support or constrain early adoption of these actions.
This event will focus on the results of WP4, and will be delivered to stakeholders identified throughout the SATURN project lifecycle with results being made public after the event.

This is exactly the kind of session the industry needs — the cost-efficiency angle (EEXI/EEDI/CII) alongside URN mitigation is what actually gets shipowners to the table. Curious whether the air bubble solutions will be framed as retrofits or only for newbuilds, since that changes the business case a lot. Speaking of visuals, I've been playing around with a "bad quality image" tool to mock up what degraded sonar or acoustic survey data might look like in presentations — has been surprisingly handy for that.
