Eric Baudin (Bureau Veritas) delivered a presentation entitled ‘How to silence ships: Preliminary results from the SATURN project’ this month (6th December) to the GICAN (French Industry Cluster of ship building) which included contributions from Johan Bosschers, Thomas Lloyd, and Frans Hendrik Lafeber (MARIN).
The presentation included examples of the mitigation measures tested by the SATURN project to minimize ship noise throughout its research programme. This included an overview of:
Optimization of the ship propeller design
Delay cavitation inception
Minimise cavitation noise
Changes to the propulsor concept
Injection of air bubbles
Around hull against machinery noise (Masker System)
Into the cavitation (Prairie System)
The work presented from MARIN also included some updated figures and data regarding the insertion loss and source level attenuation of the Masker and Prairie system. The model presented have been simplified for their effect so they are more useable in practice!

This was a very insightful read, especially the way the topic of underwater noise and its wider environmental impact was explained in such a structured and accessible manner. It’s great to see technical discussions presented in a way that both professionals and general readers can appreciate. I recently came across a similar discussion on a review blog related to https://www.phonydiploma.com/, and it offered an interesting perspective as well. Posts like this really help encourage more awareness and meaningful conversations around important research initiatives.
